Strong Rock Students Develop Leadership Skills in Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. — History came to life for a group of Strong Rock Christian School students this summer as they walked the halls of the nation's capital, learned from national leaders, and discovered what it means to lead with conviction and faith.

The students participated in Student Leadership University's SLU 201, an immersive leadership development experience that challenges high school students to grow as Christian leaders while exploring the role of faith. Throughout the week, they engaged in keynote sessions, interactive discussions, and visits to some of America's most recognizable landmarks.

Led by Strong Rock Bible teacher Hudson Hedgecoth, the group spent each day hearing from pastors, elected officials, and influential Christian leaders from across the country. Nearly a dozen keynote presentations and question-and-answer sessions encouraged students to think critically about current issues while strengthening their understanding of biblical leadership and civic responsibility.

For Hedgecoth, one of the most impactful moments came when students heard from U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.

"Speaker Johnson encouraged students to discover the passions and burdens God has placed on their hearts and pursue them for His glory," Hedgecoth said.

The experience became even more memorable when Strong Rock student Mary Cate Davis was selected as one of only two students to ask Speaker Johnson a question during the event, giving the school a unique opportunity to participate in the discussion.

Outside the conference, the group explored Washington's rich history by visiting renowned museums, monuments, and memorials. A particularly meaningful experience came at Arlington National Cemetery, where students witnessed a wreath-laying ceremony honoring the service and sacrifice of America's military members.

For junior Anjali Moreno, the trip's greatest impact came through both the places she visited and the friendships she strengthened.

"The most memorable part of the trip was going to the Washington Monument and growing closer to everyone on the trip," Moreno said. "This trip taught me how to use God's Word to find truth and to stand firm in those truths."

Student Leadership University is a ministry with one objective: to equip students to think, dream and lead at the feet of Jesus. Building on the personal leadership foundation taught in SLU 101, SLU 201 challenges students to lead as citizens and catalysts for change while exploring ten foundational components of leadership.

As the students returned home, they carried more than souvenirs and photographs. They brought back fresh perspectives on leadership, a deeper appreciation for the nation's history, and a renewed commitment to recognize Jesus as the author of their stories and to lead others with faith, purpose, and integrity.
